On September 3, 2023, the Department of Tourism – Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR), in partnership with the University of the Cordilleras (UC), celebrated the 34th Philippine Travel Mart at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. This event served as a vibrant showcase of local destinations, services, and traditions across the Philippines.
Cultural Showcase by the Saeng ya Kasay Cultural Ensemble
As a highlight of the Cordillera Administrative Region’s presentation, the Saeng ya Kasay Cultural Ensemble delivered a captivating performance that featured routines from six different provinces within the region. Each dance depicted the unique cultural heritage of its respective province, including the Talip dance of Apayao, the Dinuy-yah of Ifugao, the Natonin Eagle Dance of Mountain Province, the Suggaypo and Baliwes of Abra, the Ragragsakan of Kalinga, and the Bendian of Benguet. The performance was led by Mr. Marvin John G. Chumanew, an alumnus of the university and a former member of the ensemble.
Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, by offering students valuable opportunities for experiential learning. It also supports SDG 11.4, which aims to strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard cultural and natural heritage worldwide. Through these educational and cultural activities, the initiative fosters both personal growth and global awareness among students.
CCP Key Result Area
In line with the Center for Creative Productions (CCP) Key Result Area (KRA) 1, Goal 2, this initiative underscores the importance of active participation in both internal and external events that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera Region. Engaging in such activities not only enhances awareness and appreciation of Cordilleran traditions but also strengthens community ties. By participating in cultural initiatives, we contribute to preserving and conserving the unique identity and values of the Cordillera region. Furthermore, it supports KRA 3, Goals 2 and 3, which aim to enhance linkages and networking through performances with government partners.
The University’s involvement in events like the Philippine Travel Mart is crucial, as it demonstrates the institution’s commitment to promoting and showcasing Cordillera culture to a wider audience. This event also provided students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the CCP’s Key Result Areas. By fostering cultural appreciation and awareness, we take significant steps toward preserving the rich heritage of the Cordillera Administrative Region.
