SAYTURA: Sayaw at Kultura ng Pilipinas

The University of the Cordilleras – Center for Creative Productions (UC-CCP) took a nostalgic journey down memory lane with the yesUCan concert, featuring SAYTURA: Sayaw at Kultura ng Pilipinas. This annual event, held on November 24, 2023, at the UC Theater, gathered the university’s Board of Trustees, officials, students, and the families of talented artists. Attendees were treated to an afternoon that offered a glimpse into the rich culture and traditions of the past, serving as both an enlightening experience for today’s youth and a delightful flashback for the young at heart.

The UC Dance Company and Dance Squad opened the concert with a captivating performance of the Maria Clara Suite, featuring dances such as Cariñosa, Sinakiki, La Simpatika, Habanera Botolena, La Jota Manileña, Lanceros de Tayabas, and Bulaklak ng Halamanan. These pieces, inspired by the colonial era of the Spaniards and infused with Filipino creativity, vividly illustrated the art of courtship during the 1800s and earlier. Following this, the UC Saeng ya Kasay showcased a medley of cultural dances from the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region, highlighting the distinctiveness and uniqueness of each province. The performers executed their routines with pride, celebrating their cultural heritage.

The final segment of the concert was a lively tribute to the Filipino love for celebration, featuring vibrant rural folk dances such as Subli, Itik Itik, Maglalatik, Binasuan, Kadang Kadang, Sayaw sa Bangko, and Tinikling. Each dance reflected the exuberance and joy that characterize Filipino festivities.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the SAYTURA concert specifically targeted SDG 4, particularly goal 4.7. This goal emphasizes the importance of equipping learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote sustainable development through education that fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity and recognizes the contributions of culture to sustainable development.

In conclusion, whether one has a deep appreciation for the past or not, SAYTURA provided a profound foundation for understanding the roots of Filipino traditions—be it courtship, rituals, or celebrations. Each dance carried a unique creative identity, instilling pride in the artists and reminding all attendees of the rich cultural tapestry that defines the Filipino spirit.
