On November 17, 2023, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Percussion and Orchestra celebrated a momentous milestone—their 15th anniversary—through the highly anticipated yesUCan Concert 2023. This landmark event, held at the UC Theater, was not merely a performance; it was a heartfelt tribute to the group’s remarkable journey, artistic growth, and significant contributions to the university’s vibrant cultural scene. With two performances—a 2:00 PM matinee for UC students and a 6:00 PM gala show open to the public—the concert attracted a diverse audience, further amplifying its impact within the community.
Founded in 2008 by the visionary Mr. Paul Louie Serrano, the UC Percussion and Orchestra holds the distinction of being the first orchestra in Baguio City. Under his dedicated leadership, the group has blossomed into a formidable ensemble, showcasing a rich tapestry of musical talent and creativity. The concert served as a celebration of not only the orchestra’s achievements but also the enduring legacy of artistic excellence at the university.
A Dynamic Opening
The concert commenced with an electrifying Drumline exhibition, which set a vibrant and energetic tone for the evening. The rhythmic performance captivated the audience, seamlessly transitioning into a melodic guitar ensemble that displayed the versatility and depth of the orchestra’s talents. This first set also featured a wind instruments ensemble that underscored the diversity of instruments within the orchestra, creating a rich auditory experience that resonated with attendees.
Celebrating Filipino Music
The second set was a heartfelt homage to Original Pilipino Music (OPM), as the UC Percussion and Orchestra, under the baton of Mr. Serrano, united to perform four beloved OPM pieces. These songs, cherished by many, were meticulously arranged to highlight both the technical prowess of the musicians and their deep-rooted connection to Filipino culture. The audience responded with enthusiasm, reflecting a shared appreciation for the music that forms an integral part of their heritage.
A Journey Through Time
The third set of the concert presented a diverse array of six OPM songs, artfully blending timeless classics with contemporary hits. This segment resonated profoundly with the audience, evoking nostalgia and stirring emotions. Many attendees were visibly moved, as the music conjured memories of their shared cultural experiences. The powerful engagement between the performers and the audience created an electric atmosphere, further enhancing the concert’s impact.
A Grand Finale
The grand finale of the evening was nothing short of spectacular. The UC Percussion and Orchestra returned to the stage to perform four additional OPM songs, including new Filipino portrait pieces that reflect the evolving landscape of Filipino music. The final song, “Salamat” by The Dawn, marked a poignant moment for both the performers and the audience. As the orchestra played the last notes, each member of the group was introduced, and the contributions of all involved in the production were acknowledged, creating a sense of unity and gratitude.
Special recognition was given to Peejay C. Natiola, Director of the Center for Creative Productions, and the trainers of the Chorale and Percussion and Orchestra, Mr. Paul Louie Serrano and Mr. Walter Mangusan. Their unwavering support and dedication were instrumental in the success of this event, exemplifying the Center’s mission to foster high-quality performances that inspire change and create lasting impressions.
A Commitment to Cultural Heritage
The 15th anniversary of the UC Percussion and Orchestra was not just a celebration of the group’s history; it was a testament to the power of collaboration in promoting Filipino culture. The evening underscored the importance of supporting local musicians and artists, emphasizing the university’s commitment to honoring and promoting Filipino music. Through this concert, the University of the Cordilleras reaffirmed its dedication to producing high-caliber performances that resonate with audiences, transform perspectives, and celebrate Filipino artistry.
