After a 13-year hiatus, the UC Dance Squad – UC Cheerleading Team, has made a spectacular comeback, showcasing the talent and dedication of a new generation of Jaguars. The national cheerleading championship, held on March 24, 2024, at the Philippine Sports Arena, brought together various private and state universities, as well as cheer organizations, all eager to display their skills and teamwork.
A Historic Comeback

The long-awaited return of the UC Jaguars to the national competition was met with immense excitement from supporters and alumni alike. The newly formed team did not disappoint, clinching the championship title in the College COED Level 5 Group Stunts category and securing a commendable 1st runner-up finish in the Open Pom Pair category.
The group stunts team captivated the audience with their impressive routine, earning a remarkable total score of 328 points. Their performance was marked by excellence across all judging criteria, with standout scores of 133.5 points for stunts execution, 96.5 points for stunts difficulty, and 98 points for overall performance. This achievement reflects not only the hard work and determination of the team but also the effective coaching strategies employed by the UC Dance Squad’s coaching staff.
Coaching for Safety and Skill Development
Head Coach Dr. Peejay Natiola, a legendary figure in the Philippine cheerleading community, and Co-Coach Mr. Kenneth Antonio, a former champion team member, have developed a comprehensive training program focused on safety and foundational skills. Their approach emphasizes the importance of creating a secure training environment, allowing individuals with little to no prior experience to safely develop their cheerleading skills.
By prioritizing safety and skill acquisition, the coaches aim to foster a culture of excellence while minimizing the risks often associated with high-level cheerleading. Their commitment to nurturing talent and promoting safety is a testament to their dedication to the sport and its athletes.
Achievements Across the Board
In addition to the successes of the cheerleading squad, the UC Dance Company also shone brightly at the national competition, winning two championships and one runner-up title in various dance events. All routines were choreographed by Mr. Terrence Soriano, the university’s resident dance trainer, further showcasing the depth of talent and creativity within the UC community.
Supporting Sustainable Development Goals
The initiatives undertaken by the UC Dance Squad and UC Dance Company align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. By engaging in national competitions, these teams provide students with opportunities for experiential learning, fostering creativity and innovation. Participation in such events not only enhances their skills but also prepares them for future challenges, making them more competitive on both national and international stages.
The university’s Center for Creative Productions is dedicated to providing holistic development for its students, emphasizing the importance of experiential learning in building self-confidence and global competitiveness. This commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals resonates with the university’s mission and vision, encapsulated in the phrase “Tatak UC.”
Conclusion
As the first generation of the UC Dance Squad and Dance Company proudly states, “The Legacy Continues.” Their remarkable achievements serve as a reminder of the power of teamwork, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. With a strong foundation in safety and skill development, the UC Jaguars are poised to inspire future generations of cheerleaders and dancers, leaving an indelible mark on the national stage while championing sustainable practices in education and sports.
