The Aliwan Fiesta: A Cultural Extravaganza

Since its inception in 2003, the Aliwan Fiesta has earned its reputation as the grandest festival of festivals in the Philippines. This annual event serves as a melting pot of cultural expressions, uniting contingents from various regions, provinces, cities, and towns to present the best in cultural street dances, intricately designed floats, and the prestigious Reyna search. It is a celebration of the rich tapestry of Filipino culture, drawing thousands of spectators eager to witness the vibrant displays of heritage and artistry.

“Tawid”: A Dance of Legacy and Learning

The University of the Cordilleras’ performance featured a traditional dance from the Mountain Province in the Cordillera Region. This captivating piece tells the story of Lumawig, revered as “the Greatest of all Spirits,” who imparted essential knowledge of agriculture, arts, and cultural practices to the mountain dwellers. Choreographed by the talented trainers Mr. Kurt Alalag and Mr. Marvin John Chumanew, under the guidance of Dr. Peejay C. Natiola, “Tawid” embodies the enduring spirit and cultural richness of the Igorot people, passed down through generations.

A Triumph of Spirit and Skill

After a hiatus from national competitions, the University of the Cordilleras emerged with remarkable achievements at the Aliwan Fiesta. The ensemble not only captured the prestigious Pride of Place Award but also secured a commendable position as Runner-Up. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students and their mentors, showcasing the university’s commitment to excellence in cultural representation.

Aligning with Global Goals

The participation of the University of the Cordilleras in the Aliwan Fiesta goes beyond mere performance; it aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, it supports SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing students with invaluable experiential learning opportunities. Additionally, it advances SDG 11.4, which emphasizes the importance of protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage worldwide. Through these initiatives, students not only gain personal growth but also cultivate a broader global awareness.

Strengthening Cultural Ties

The initiative resonates with the Center for Creative Productions’ Key Result Area (KRA) 1, Goal 2, which underscores the importance of active participation in events that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera Region. Engaging in such activities fosters a deeper appreciation for Cordilleran traditions and strengthens community bonds. By immersing themselves in cultural initiatives, students contribute to the preservation and conservation of the unique identity and values of the Cordillera region.

A Legacy of Cultural Pride

The University of the Cordilleras’ participation in the 2024 Aliwan Fiesta exemplifies a profound commitment to cultural preservation and educational growth. By presenting the dance “Tawid,” the ensemble not only honored the heritage of the Cordillera Region but also provided students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that align with global and local objectives. The accolades received, including the Pride of Place Award and Runner-Up position, highlight the significant impact of such initiatives in promoting cultural pride and sustaining traditions.
