On December 11 and 12, 2024, the UC Chorale, under the leadership of Mr. Walter Mangusan, had the honor of conducting a choir workshop for the San Carlos Elementary School of Baguio City. The request for this outreach activity was made in preparation for the school’s participation in an upcoming choir competition at the prestigious Baguio Country Club. The UC Chorale responded enthusiastically, sending not only their current members but also their alumni members to assist in the workshop’s production.
Day 1: Strengthening Vocal Techniques and Song Interpretation
The first day of the workshop focused on the foundational aspects of choral singing. Members of the UC Chorale shared their knowledge of basic vocal exercises and techniques aimed at improving the choirs’ vocalization. They also worked on pronunciation, teaching the San Carlos Elementary Choir how to correctly articulate the lyrics of their songs. Additionally, the session covered the nuances of song dynamics, helping the students understand the importance of expression and emotion in their musical performance.
Day 2: A Performance and Fine-Tuning the Repertoire
On the second day, the UC Chorale treated the students to a special performance, showcasing a beautiful Christmas song that entertained and inspired the young choir members. After the performance, the focus shifted to polishing the songs that the San Carlos Elementary Choir would be performing in the competition. The UC Chorale members, including alumni, worked closely with the students, offering feedback and suggestions to enhance the overall performance.
UC Center for Creative Productions: Fostering Community Engagement and Sustainability
The UC Chorale’s outreach initiative is part of the broader mission of the UC Center for Creative Productions, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11). This goal highlights the importance of creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities. By offering open-to-the-public performances and engaging with local schools and communities, the center fosters creativity, inclusivity, and cultural exchange. The activities also encourage students and community members to appreciate the richness of musical diversity.
Building Stronger Connections and Future Collaborations
The workshop culminated in a fellowship between the UC Chorale and the San Carlos Elementary Choir, with Atty. Paolo Raynor Salvosa also joining the gathering. During this time, both groups discussed future plans for more workshops and collaborations in the coming years. The success of this event not only enriched the participants’ musical skills but also strengthened the ties between the university and the local community.
In conclusion, the UC Chorale’s outreach workshop at San Carlos Elementary School was a resounding success. It exemplified the power of music to bring people together, build community, and foster artistic growth. The UC Center for Creative Productions looks forward to hosting more successful engagements and workshops, continuing its mission of promoting inclusive cultural experiences for all.
