At the much-anticipated Rhythm of the Highlands: A Showcase of Culture and Dance 2025, held on February 15, 2025, the University of the Cordilleras Center for Creative Productions made a powerful impression. The Saeng ya Kasay Cultural Ensemble competed against 24 vibrant contingents at Melvin Jones Football Grounds, Harrison Road, Baguio City, Benguet, alongside the Dance Company, Dance Squad, Percussion, and Orchestra.
Rhythm of the Highlands: A Showcase of Culture and Dance
A signature event of the Panagbenga Festival, held annually in Baguio City, Philippines. It’s a competition where cultural dance groups from the Cordillera region showcase their heritage through traditional dances. This event is a highlight of the Panagbenga Festival, which celebrates the culture and spirit of Baguio and the Cordilleras. The event aims to promote and preserve the rich cultural traditions of the Cordillera region through vibrant and expressive dance.
The “Rhythm of the Highlands” competition is a celebration of the diverse cultures and artistic talents within the Cordilleras. It provides a platform for local communities to share their stories and traditions through dance, contributing to the overall vibrancy and cultural richness of the Panagbenga Festival.
The University of the Cordilleras’ performance represented the Isnag Tribe from the Province of Apayao in the Cordillera Region. Showcasing the vibrant traditions of the Basi of Conner, a cherished local wine, symbolises the heart of Apayao’s agricultural identity, renowned for its quality sugarcane wine, and the community is dedicated to enhancing its production. Kabinnulig, an annual celebration in Flora, Apayao, honours the hard work of farmers and their carabaos, reinforcing the values of unity and camaraderie among the community. And Say-am, celebrated in the municipalities of Kabugao and Luna, is a grand feast and traditional thanksgiving ritual for the Isnag people. Choreographed by the talented trainers Mr. Marvin John Chumanew and Darryl Ignas, under the guidance of Dr. Peejay C. Natiola, entitled “Magragsa Tada Lahud” (Let Us Celebrate)
A Triumph of Spirit and Skill
The University of the Cordilleras emerged with remarkable achievements at the Rhythm of the Highlands: A Showcase of Culture and Dance. The ensemble not only captured the best in attire and props Award but also secured the first runner-up spot. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students and their mentors, showcasing the university’s commitment to excellence in cultural representation.
Aligning with Global Goals
Beyond just a performance, the University of the Cordilleras’ involvement in Rhythm of the Highlands: A Showcase of Culture and Dance supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN. In particular, it helps achieve SDG 4: Quality Education by giving students priceless opportunities for experiential learning. It also promotes SDG 11.4, which highlights the significance of protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage worldwide. Students grow personally and have a more global perspective as a result of these programs.
Strengthening Cultural Ties
Key Result Area (KRA) 1, Goal 2 of the Center for Creative Productions, which emphasises the value of actively participating in events that honour the rich cultural legacy of the Cordillera Region, is in line with the program. Participating in such events improves community ties and cultivates a greater understanding of Cordilleran customs. Students help to preserve and conserve the distinctive identity and values of the Cordillera region by being involved in cultural initiatives.
The ensemble acknowledged the value of sustainability in our celebrations while proudly showcasing Apayao’s burgeoning culture. The ensemble has embraced the usage of recyclable, biodegradable, and botanical materials in the dancing competition, further demonstrating our dedication to environmental care. We support a movement towards sustainability while honouring the resilient spirit of the Isnag tribe and the lively culture of Apayao. Let us celebrate not only through dance and tradition but also by honouring our commitment to the environment. Magragsa Tada Lahud!
