On September 27, 2024, the University of the Cordilleras through the compelling artistry of the UC Dance Company, proudly participated in the NCCA Sayaw Pinoy 2024—a national cultural dance showcase organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA). Among many groups from across the country, the UC Dance Company stood out, earning a prestigious Top 14 spot for their moving performance.
Guided by the creative vision of Lea Alhambra, the team presented a contemporary dance piece inspired by “Magpahinga” by the Filipino folk-pop band Ben&Ben. The performance explored the powerful themes of rest, self-reflection, and emotional healing, brought to life through fluid movement, expressive choreography, and emotionally charged storytelling.
Lea Alhambra’s choreography beautifully captured the song’s heartfelt message, blending modern and lyrical dance techniques to portray the mental and emotional struggles faced by many today. The UC Dance Company’s heartfelt performance resonated deeply with audiences and judges alike, making them one of the most memorable acts in the competition.
The university’s participation in NCCA Sayaw Pinoy aligns with its advocacy for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Through this performance, the UC Dance Company offered more than just a display of talent—it delivered a message about the importance of taking a pause and prioritizing mental health.
The group’s involvement also contributes to SDG 11.2.5, focusing on the promotion of arts and cultural heritage. Under the leadership of the Center for Creative Productions (CCP), UC continues to elevate its role in national cultural movements while supporting student-artists in developing socially meaningful performances.
The success of the UC Dance Company at Sayaw Pinoy 2024 highlights the university’s unwavering dedication to artistic excellence, mental health advocacy, and cultural education. With leaders like Lea Alhambra nurturing the creative potential of its students, the University of the Cordilleras remains a beacon for innovation in the performing arts.
In every step, turn, and pause, the UC Dance Company proudly carried the spirit of Tatak UC—where creativity meets purpose.
