UC Dance Squad and Dance Company Advance Excellence, Well-Being, and Cultural Engagement on the National Stage

The University of the Cordilleras (UC), through its Dance Squad and Dance Company under the Center for Creative Productions (CCP), demonstrated excellence in performance and student development during its participation in the 2025 Philippine National Cheer and Dance Competition, held on March 28–30, 2025, at the Philippine Sports Arena.

The national competition, one of the most anticipated cheer and dance events in the country, gathered nearly 200 teams from schools and universities nationwide, with select international teams competing in chosen categories. The event provided a highly competitive platform for institutions to benchmark performance standards, creativity, and athletic discipline.

Podium Finishes and Creative Excellence

The UC Dance Company competed in three Dance Championship categories—College Duo Hip-Hop, College All-Girl Pair, and College Mixed Contemporary. All three entries secured podium finishes, reflecting the dancers’ technical proficiency, artistic maturity, and disciplined preparation. The team was guided by Aldrin Tanawe and Ken-J Gweneth Gonzaga, whose leadership contributed to the consistent quality and competitive success of the performances.

The achievements highlight UC’s emphasis on outcomes-based education, where creative instruction is translated into measurable performance outcomes—an approach aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education).

A Milestone for the UC Dance Squad

Meanwhile, the UC Dance Squad competed in Open Coed Advanced, College Group Stunt Level 5, and Senior Group Stunt Level 4 categories. A significant highlight of the competition was the team’s first participation in the Open Coed Advanced division following its revival in 2023.

Competing against 16 teams, the squad finished Top 5, surpassing several established programs, including the defending champion, which placed sixth. Under the guidance of Coach Frances Kenneth Antonio, the team demonstrated remarkable progress despite many members starting with little to no prior cheerleading experience.

Beyond competitive results, the team’s participation underscored the importance of physical fitness, mental resilience, and teamwork—contributing to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and promoting inclusive participation consistent with SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

Learning Beyond the Classroom

According to Dr. Peejay Natiola, Director of the UC Center for Creative Productions, participation in national-level competitions plays a vital role in holistic student development. Exposure to high-level performances not only enhances technical and artistic skills but also builds discipline, confidence, and resilience—competencies essential for lifelong learning and leadership.

Such initiatives align with the university’s Key Result Areas on student development, creative innovation, and institutional visibility, while reinforcing UC’s commitment to meaningful co-curricular engagement.

Culture, Community, and Global Relevance

Through its participation, UC also contributed to cultural sustainability and creative expression, supporting SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting the performing arts as a vital part of cultural identity. Engagement with national and international teams further fostered collaboration and benchmarking, consistent with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Upholding the UC Mandate

The UC Center for Creative Productions continues to uphold the university’s mandate of delivering quality, values-driven performances. While podium finishes are celebrated, the Center emphasizes that the most meaningful outcomes are the lessons learned, the personal and collective growth achieved, and the lasting memories formed through the experience.

Through sustained participation in national competitions, the University of the Cordilleras reaffirms its commitment to producing globally competitive, culturally grounded, and socially responsible graduates, advancing excellence in both education and creative expression.
